Meet Our Founder & CEO

Dr Munzir Malik is an Acute Medicine specialty trainee based at Wrexham Maelor Hospital in North Wales, with special interests in cardiology, echocardiography and Point-of-Care Ultrasound (POCUS).

After completing Internal Medicine Training and obtaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP UK), he progressed into higher specialty training in Acute Internal Medicine. His clinical work inspired a wider ambition: to make high-quality, practical ultrasound education more accessible to clinicians across North Wales.

Following the completion of BSE Level 1 echocardiography accreditation, Dr Malik worked closely with the Cardiology Department to establish a structured Level 1 echocardiography teaching programme for resident doctors.

He subsequently organised North Wales’ first FAMUS-approved hands-on POCUS course. The fully booked course received an outstanding response and enabled local clinicians to begin their ultrasound accreditation journeys without having to travel to other parts of Wales or England.

Dr Malik also became the first approved ultrasound-assisted lumbar puncture supervisor in Wales. He established a regular teaching programme supporting resident doctors in developing competence and confidence in ultrasound-assisted lumbar puncture, with excellent engagement and progression towards sign-off.

Within the Acute Medical Unit, he introduced regular weekly hands-on ultrasound teaching, giving clinicians continued opportunities to practise POCUS and integrate it safely into acute patient care.

Recognising the need for greater academic support, he launched the North Wales Academic Hub. The initiative helps resident doctors participate in research, complete publications and strengthen their applications for Internal Medicine Training and other competitive training programmes.

These initiatives led to the creation of POCUS Wales and the launch of POCUSWales.com—a growing platform dedicated to ultrasound education, mentorship, collaboration and the development of a supportive POCUS community.

Dr Malik is currently leading the organisation of the First International North Wales Acute Care & POCUS Conference, taking place in Wrexham in December 2026. The conference will bring together professionals from the full range of specialties involved in acute care under one collaborative banner.

Dr Malik founded POCUSWales.com after recognising the need for accessible, clinically relevant and case-based education in Point-of-Care Ultrasound.

What began as a digital educational platform has since developed into a growing medical education initiative through POCUS Wales and POCUS Education Limited, delivering hands-on courses, regular teaching programmes, simulation-based procedural training, conferences, mentorship and fellowship opportunities.

At the heart of POCUS Wales is a simple philosophy: ultrasound is best learned by scanning.

Its educational activities therefore place particular emphasis on supervised hands-on experience, clinical scenarios, case-based learning and the responsible integration of ultrasound findings into bedside clinical decision-making.
