Prof Mumtaz Patel

President Royal College of Physicians

The Conference Has Been Created Around A Simple Principle: Acute Care Is Multidisciplinary.

We are honoured to welcome Professor Mumtaz Patel, President of the Royal College of Physicians, as Chief Guest for the inaugural conference.

Her presence marks an important milestone for the first International North Wales Acute Care & POCUS Conference and reflects its ambition to develop a high-quality platform for multidisciplinary acute care education in North Wales.

The conference has been designed to move beyond the traditional format of a full day of lectures.

The morning programme will feature a series of focused talks, expert discussions and presentations covering important and emerging areas of acute care, alongside opportunities to engage with industry and explore developments in medical technology and clinical practice.

The afternoon will then move from listening to doing.

Delegates will have the opportunity to participate in a range of interactive and practical sessions designed around skills that can be translated back into everyday clinical practice.

Point-of-Care Ultrasound will form a major practical component of the conference.

Dedicated hands-on POCUS stations will give delegates opportunities to practise bedside ultrasound under supervision, with teaching focused on practical image acquisition, interpretation and clinical application.

Sessions will include core POCUS alongside some of the areas that have become a particular focus of POCUS Wales education, including procedural ultrasound, ultrasound-assisted lumbar puncture and ocular ultrasound.

The emphasis throughout will be on one question:

How can ultrasound findings help us make better decisions at the bedside?

POCUS is only one part of acute care.

Dedicated surgical and practical skills sessions will broaden the conference beyond medicine and provide an interactive learning environment for clinicians from surgical and other acute specialties.

This multidisciplinary structure is central to the conference: different specialties bring different expertise, and there is enormous value in learning those skills from one another.

The conference will also provide a platform for clinicians, trainees and students to showcase their work through:

  • Oral presentations
  • Poster presentations
  • POCUS and clinical case presentations
  • Interactive clinical discussions
  • Hands-on workshops and practical skills sessions

Rather than delegates simply attending and listening, the programme has been designed to encourage participation, discussion and shared learning throughout the day.

Acute Medicine may coordinate much of the journey of an acutely unwell patient, but excellent acute care depends on collaboration.

Emergency physicians may see the patient first. Acute physicians stabilise and investigate. Surgeons and other specialists provide definitive expertise. Radiology, critical care and the wider multidisciplinary team may all become involved.

Yet educational meetings are often separated by specialty.

The 1st International North Wales Acute Care & POCUS Conference aims to challenge that model.

For one day, we want the specialties providing acute care to share the same platform, discuss the same clinical problems and learn practical skills from each other.

The conference represents the next stage in the development of the educational work of POCUS Wales.

Following the establishment of regular POCUS teaching and dedicated hands-on ultrasound courses in North Wales, the conference expands that vision into a larger international and multidisciplinary educational platform.

Our ambition is to establish this as a flagship event for North Wales and one of the region’s major acute care conferences, bringing together clinicians, educators, trainees, researchers and industry partners with a shared interest in improving the care of acutely unwell patients.

Learn Together. Practise Together. Improve Acute Care Togethe

One day. Multiple specialties. Practical skills. Shared learning.

Welcome to the 1st International North Wales Acute Care & POCUS Conference.
